Animal welfare is concerned not just with the physical, but also themental, health of an animal – in other words how the animal feels. As the number of domestic animals kept in the UK for research, agricultural purposes and as pets continues to increase, the belief that they have the capacity to suffer not only evokes concern over how these animals are treated, but also underlies the assessment of animal welfare.
